In November 2024, Kitchener was officially certified as a Bird Friendly City by Nature Canada, recognizing the city's commitment to reducing threats to birds, protecting and restoring habitats, and engaging the community.

The Bird Friendly Kitchener team is a subcommittee of Waterloo Region Nature, made up of dedicated community members including ecologists, educators, artists, and bird enthusiasts. We work cooperatively with the City of Kitchener, the University of Waterloo, and other community organizations.

Our work focuses on addressing key threats to birds — including window collisions, habitat loss, pesticide use, and cat predation — while promoting bird-friendly practices across the community.
